On April 8th 2014, Dianne Hall, Professor of Aviation and Technology at San Jose State University as part of the PDEEP Faculty Exchange program gave a lecture at Allama Iqbal Open University. The lecture, about her own personal journey in the high tech industry and the importance of women in technology related fields was met with great admiration and was greatly received by AIOU faculty and students. To provide a brief summary, at the beginning of her lecture Dianne begins by detailing the importance of education in her own home growing up as a child and how her parents both sought education through working experiences, including her father who learned predominantly through correspondence much like many of the students at AIOU. She then goes on to state that, though she didn’t know it at the time, the free and open environment as well as good examples set by her parents and teachers are what allowed her to find her passion for engineering and later teaching. However, this is not to say that her journey was without struggles, as Dianne also notes how often times she was the only woman in a primarily male dominated field, classes and job positions. Here within the PDEEP grant we strive to create and expand the current realm of educational possibilities for people who are willing to learn and have an interest in pursuing careers in the blooming fields of computer science and information technology. In synchronous fashion, Dianne, during her talk stressed how continuing education throughout employment can be extremely beneficial for career advancement even after graduation and that those who have a true passion for learning and expanding knowledge should seek employment opportunities with possibility for further training. In league with the excellent examples that Dianne provided to AIOU faculty and students in the future the PDEEP grant plans to institute a student stipend program that will allow for students at AIOU to take part in paid internships to expand both their range of skill sets and provide them with real world educational opportunities.
