Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) and San José State University (SJSU) held an online academic session Orientation to Collaborative Online Intercultural Learning (COIL) on Tuesday May 19, 2015. The session was organized and facilitated by Assistant Professor of Secondary Teacher Education, Dr. Munazza Ambreen (AIOU).
Mass Communication Department Chairman Prof. Dr. Syed Abdul Siraj (AIOU) chaired and opened the event by explaining the importance for education that builds intercultural skills and challenges stereotypes. His vision is to provide more accessible education that creates global citizens who transcend cultural, historical, and knowledge boundaries.
Professor of Communications, Minna Holopainen (SJSU), lead a discussion on the benefits and challenges of online education that provides students with skills to work in modern global teams environments. She invited AIOU faculty to form COIL partnerships with SJSU instructors for future projects that would bring together students from both universities.
Examples of successful COIL projects were presented by Dr. Jason Laker (SJSU) of the Counselor Education Department, Professor Zahid Majeed (AIOU) of the Special Education Department, and Dr. Munazza Ambreen(AIOU).
Interested AIOU instructors will participate in a COIL workshop in the Summer of 2015, which prepares them for COIL projects with SJSU in the Fall of 2015.
